This website documents special projects and exhibitions of the Cranbrook 3D Design program which is part of the world-renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Cranbrook was the origin of some of the most important American design voices of the Modernist era, and now serves as an incubator of new thinking in design culture. The 3D Design department is an experimental laboratory to explore human needs as expressed in the furniture and products we live with. Through a process of questioning, making and discussing, our graduates develop a broad critical framework for evaluating design. The program straddles the contexts of industrial design as it relates to mass production and fine design, situated in the overlap between design, fine art, and craft. Our approach is best suited for graduate-level design students who wish to develop an architectural and spatial awareness in their work.
Wherever possible, designer names are linked to their studio websites. Please inquire directly with them for print quality images.
Note from Scott:
In my role as 3D designer-in-residence at Cranbrook since 2001, I’ve had the honor of working with nearly 150 young designers. All of these talented people arrived on our doorstep because we share a sense of wonder about the potentials of design. Each of them did the hard work of finding their authentic voice as a designer. Now we watch in fascination as they enter the world, armed with their research, to find new resources, partners, and industries that help to realize their vision.
Cranbrook 3D is both a community and an ethos that finds its way into the world through a variety of diverse practices. The content here is fully owned by the designers and shown with their permission. This web archive is a tribute to the incredible talent that makes up our community. It is also an outward-facing platform to promote the work of our people to new potential clients, galleries, collectors, and industry partners. We want the archive to grow and we need your help. Please share your inspiring new projects so we can include more great examples of design within our community.
With warm gratitude,
Scott Klinker
